While the majority of the country may only be concerned about wearing green to avoid getting pinched on St. Patrick’s Day, if you’re in Massachusetts, you have access to one of the largest celebrations in the country. The Irish roots run deep in the area, and every year Boston transforms into a sea of green to honor its heritage. If you are making plans to visit the liveliest place for the Boston St Patricks festivities, we’ve got you covered with all you need to know below.
The Boston St Patrick’s Day Parade
The Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a South Boston tradition and will kick off on Sunday, March 16, 2025. Known as the St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade, this massive event celebrates Irish culture and the 1776 British evacuation. The parade draws people from all over the country to witness creative Irish-themed floats, variety shows, pipe-playing bands, and Irish dancers.
What route does the parade take?
The parade begins at Broadway Station, proceeds along West Broadway to East Broadway, turns onto P Street, winds through East Fourth, K, and East Fifth Streets, then loops via G Street, Thomas Park, and Telegraph Street, concluding at Dorchester Street near Andrew Square. So no matter what viewpoint you pick in Southie, you have a good opportunity to witness the full lineup.
What time does the parade start?
The parade kicks off at 11:30 AM. Keep in mind, this event is known for drawing crowds of up to a million happy parade watchers. So be sure to arrive early to secure your spot.
What happens if it rains?
Rain won’t stop the parade—organizers at the South Boston Allied Veterans Council proceed rain or shine. Spectators should bring ponchos or umbrellas, as wet weather thins crowds but keeps the spirit alive.
