What are cannabis concentrates?

Cannabis or THC concentrate can be quite potent, having a high amount of THC, ranging from 50 to 90 percent. In this form, the concentrate can be up to four times stronger in THC content than your typical high grade marijuana, which tops out at around 25 percent. Cannabis concentrate originally comes from flower, however, it is put through a process called extraction in order to get to its reduced, stronger form sans plant material. 

What are different types of THC concentrates?

There are many different types of THC concentrates. The various forms of concentrates are a result of the way in which they were extracted. The two main ways to extract cannabis include solvent-based and solventless extractions.

Solvent-based

You might remember the word solvent from chemistry class, but essentially it’s a substance that gets rid of something unwanted. In THC concentrates, it’s how plant material is stripped away leaving behind the desired THC, CBD, and cannabinoids. For example, just like when you wipe down your surfaces using disinfectant it cleans and kills bacteria without damaging, say, your countertops. 

The two most popular chemicals used in this method are CO2 and Butane.

CO2 oil uses carbon dioxide as the solvent for its extraction. It’s high in terpenes and frequently used in vape cartridges as well as disposable vapes.

BHO Extracts uses butane gas as a solvent and can come in multiple different forms including shatter, and wax. 

Solventless

Their counterparts, extractions that use physical methods rather than chemicals such as butane or CO2 are solventless. The goal is still to separate the plant material to leave behind the cannabinoids and terpenes undamaged and in their pure form, however, methods such as pressure or heat are used. Also, just as the different solvent-based extractions yield a different product, the same is true for solventless concentrates. 

Hash is one you’re likely familiar with and frequently uses temperature in its extraction process. It typically comes in a brick or ball and can be consumed a few different ways, sprinkled onto flower and smoked or even dabbed with a dab rig.

Budder is another type of THC concentrate and gets its name because it is whipped and resembles butter. It can be spread on a joint or used with a dab rig.

What are pros of THC concentrate?

Having a wide selection of different concentrates is definitely a plus, but there are several more benefits to consuming cannabis in its concentrated form. Cannabis concentrate allows you to have a higher potency in a smaller quantity. Not to mention concentrate can be consumed in many ways–in a vape pen, edibles, tinctures, and more. Some may find that the smell from weed concentrate is also less potent and therefore more discrete. Lastly, THC concentrates can also have health-related benefits as they are high in Cannabinoids which have been known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
