What is the best flower for cannabutter?
The best flower for cannabutter really depends on the effects and flavors you’re looking for. In general, you’ll want a potent, aromatic strain since the butter will carry both the cannabinoids and the terpenes from your flower. Many people choose hybrids for a balanced high, but a relaxing indica or energizing sativa can work just as well depending on your preference.
A few tips:
-
THC-rich strains are best if you want stronger psychoactive effects, while CBD-rich flower makes for a more mellow, therapeutic butter.
-
Go for fresh, high-quality flower rather than trim or shake—though trim can work if you’re aiming for a budget-friendly batch.
-
Popular strains for cannabutter include Blue Dream, Girl Scout Cookies, OG Kush, and Northern Lights because of their strong flavors and reliable effects.
Ultimately, the best flower for cannabutter is one you already enjoy smoking or vaping—the flavor and effects will translate into your edibles.
5 Easy Steps to Make Cannabutter
- Choose butter with a high fat content, it will help absorb the cannabinoids.
- For small batches use 3.5 grams of flower (such as Fire Stomper by High Supply). For large batches you may need up to 1 ounce.
- Grind your decarbed marijuana and add it to a saucepan with a 1:1 mixture of melted butter and water. (See notes below if you don’t have a grinder).
- Simmer this mixture for a couple hours on a low heat.
- After a few hours, strain the mixture, discard the ground cannabis, and refrigerate your cannabutter until it’s ready to use.
Now that you have the main ingredient – cannabis butter – let’s bake!
